Blackfoot Grapplers Host Shelley
The Blackfoot Hish School wrestling team won yet another dual last night, this one at home against the Shelley Russets 46-18. They’ve been making a habit of limiting opposing teams to less than 20 points, while they are commonly in the 40 to 60 point range. However the Russets were able to win 5 individual matches—something not many teams do against the Broncos.
Shelley head coach Jon Cook was proud of his team’s effort. “We won our matches in the third period, which speaks well for our conditioning. Any coach is happy to see his wrestlers maintaining their pace until the end.” Chase Call 119 had an especially good third round on the night, where he was able to ride his opponent the full two minutes and deny him of an escape point. Shelley’s Colton Hodges 145 avioded the third round altogether by pinning his opponent mid way through the second round. “He’s really wrestling strong right now,” commented Cook on Hodges’ match. Other quality performances by Chase Richins 140, Colby Searle 125, and Spencer Barney 135 made it clear that the Shelley wrestling team is a legitimate force in the 3A ranks.
Blackfoot’s all-star of the night was 103 lb Juan Navarro. Besides his ability to get pins in the first round, Navarro consistently shows good pressure and fluid takedowns. When asked about his ambitions for the season he’s clear that he has his sights set on a state title.
Blackfoot head coach Brian Barlow felt his team wrestled “a little flat” against the Russets but was pleased with the overall outcome. “It’s tough to stay consistently on top of our game. Tonight we were flat, but last week against Bonneville was our best dual in the past few years.” However varied the season goes, coach Barlow has a history of dialing up peak performances in the post-season. Their next match is a home meet against Rigby and Pocatello next Friday, with district action beginning Feb 18th at Rigby High School.
